Mapping Shifts in Teaching and Learning Supported by Performance Assessments
Last updated on 09/26/22.
Welcome! The purpose of this map is to communicate which states and districts are currently developing and implementing performance assessments as part of their efforts to transform learning, instruction, and assessment to be deeper, more powerful, and more responsive to the needs to each and every learner. Our hope is to spark a collective conversation that builds toward a shared understanding of the emergence and growth in performance assessment in both state policy and local efforts. Through this geographic visualization, we hope to help address questions about where performance assessment is happening and perhaps spur new questions in an ongoing learning agenda. Please see the Notes and Caveats below for more information on our process.
For the purpose of this map, we have attempted to identify states and districts that are:
-
Advancing performance assessments, portfolios, or exhibitions (as distinguished in slide 17 of this presentation),
-
Describing and/or documenting the work on their website or other public communications, and
-
Either attaching stakes to performance assessments (at the student level and/or for systems accountability) or incorporating them as an integral component of a broader focus on shifting teaching and learning to be deeper and more responsive to the needs of every learner.
For more information on the potential role of performance assessments in education systems that support meaningful learning, please see Accountability for College and Career Readiness: Developing a New Paradigm.
